‘Personal Data’ means information or pieces of information that could allow you to be identified.

What data do we collect?

Think Africa collects the following personal data:

  • Full name, phone number, email, country of origin, current country of living, reason for joining, occupation/expertise/organisation, languages spoken and birthday. For organisations, we collect Company name, URL, email, number of employees, yearly revenue, expectations, address, contact person’s full name and email, and feedback. Currently Think Africa does not collect any sensitive data.
  • Cookie information

How do we collect your data?

You directly provide Think Africa with most of the data we collect. We collect data and process data when you:

  • Register and become a member of Think Africa
  • Subscribe to our Newsletter from the website
  • Voluntarily complete a registration, sign-up or application form for an activity
  • Use or view our website via your browser’s cookies
  • Leave comments on the site. We collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

How will we use your data?

We do not sell your Personal Data to third parties.

Think Africa collects your data so that we can:

  • Add you to our database for our membership records purpose
  • Email you with information relating to the organisation, or send you the newsletters

How do we store your data?

Think Africa securely stores your data at our G-Suite account.

Think Africa will keep your data as long as you remain a member.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

The individual member data will be updated annually when membership is renewed. In the case that it is not renewed, a reminder email will be sent and a member will be given the chance to say whether they want their data to be deleted or not. An individual has a grace period of maximum 6 months before their details are completely deleted from our records. For the newsletter, the person can unsubscribe and have their details deleted anytime they wish to do so.

Who we share your data with

One of Think Africa’s aims is to create and maintain a multidisciplinary network of the professional diaspora in Finland. The purpose of this is to connect them as resources to the business community in Finland, particularly those aiming to bring products or services to the African countries where our members have relevant networks. Due to this, some personal data of consenting members could be shared with a company for the purpose of establishing a link between them.

What are your data protection rights?

Think Africa would like to make sure you are fully aware of all of your data protection rights. Every user is entitled to the following:

  • The right to access – You have the right to request Think Africa for copies of your personal data. 
  • The right to rectification – You have the right to request that Think Africa correct any information you believe is inaccurate. You also have the right to request our organisation to complete the information you believe is incomplete.
  • The right to erasure – You have the right to request that Think Africa erase your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to restrict processing – You have the right to request that Think Africa restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to object to processing – You have the right to object to Think Africa’s processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to data portability – You have the right to request that Think Africa transfer the data that we have collected to another organization, or directly to you, under certain conditions.
