VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT #NOVEMBER

This month’s Volunteer Spotlight #November features Joolokeni Leskela, who has been a wonderful asset to our Marketing and Communications team.

Joolekeni is a Finnish Namibian born who was raised in Namibia. She works as a Marketing and Communications Specialist at Funzi, a Finnish organisation that provides access to learning 21st century skills via mobile phones.

…moving with purpose!

“Although my father was Finnish, I moved to Finland for the first time when I was 18 years. At first, I found it difficult to feel at home here as a young African that didn’t speak the language. I eventually moved back to Namibia for many years and I recently relocated back to Finland. This time around I have been more conscious of getting involved in the diaspora community and was happy to learn about Think Africa from a friend.”

Why Volunteering

“I believe that the African diaspora community in Finland plays an important role in not only keeping people connected to the continent, but also in empowering the community to integrate and thrive in the Finnish society.”  “Volunteering my time for marketing and communication tasks in Think Africa allows me to use my expertise to engage with and support the efforts of the organisation.”

Joolekeni has enjoyed volunteering with Think Africa because of the “true sense of community and collective mission to make a social and economic impact”.

“Volunteering has helped me feel connected and learn from a community here in Finland, even during a pandemic.”
